🌍 ClimateBuddy – AI-Powered Climate Education Platform

Inspiration

The 2023 climate crisis made it clear: climate education isn’t enough. People struggle to understand their local impact or take meaningful action. I wanted to build something that teaches, motivates, and measures real-world impact—all in one platform.

What it does

ClimateBuddy is your AI-powered climate sidekick. It:

  • Offers personalized tutoring via a local LLM (Ollama + Llama 3.1).
  • Shows real-time weather & air quality data.
  • Lets users complete gamified climate actions and track CO₂/water savings.
  • Connects users with a community to share achievements and tips.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React + TypeScript, Recharts for interactive charts, responsive mobile-first UI.
  • Backend: FastAPI serving APIs; Pandas/NumPy for data processing; Plotly for charts.
  • AI: Ollama LLM for age-adaptive climate tutoring.
  • Gamification: Points, levels, and impact metrics.
  • Community: Social feed, achievement sharing, collaborative challenges.

Challenges we ran into

  • Integrating real-time AI tutoring without lag.
  • Handling inconsistent API responses from weather and air quality services.
  • Designing gamification logic that’s fun but realistic.
  • Supporting multi-language explanations from the AI.
