Inspiration
We were wandering around the building, and passing by a water fountain, were inspired to make a product related to the importance of hydration.
What it does
Our product is integrated into a waterbottle, and reminds users visually to drink from the bottle every hour. It features a digital display with a countdown of minutes, an LED that flashes when it is time to drink, and a button to reset the system after drinking.
How we built it
We used an Arduino microcontroller to facilitate the different circuits. All the electronics were built on a breadboard, connected with wires and resistors. Other components include the reset button, the flashing LED, and our digital display, which was composed of two 7-segment displays.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge that we ran into around a day into the hackathon, was switching the idea for our product after we realized our initial idea was not feasible. Our original idea was to use temperature sensors to measure the water level of a water bottle (and therefore how much you've drunk), but we concluded that the sensors were not able to provide the level of accuracy that we needed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first hackathon and we are both happy with what we were able to accomplish. We both think that being able to create a working product as high schoolers in such a high pressure environment, with so little time, is truly remarkable.
What we learned
We learned a lot about hardware, microcontrollers, and how to manage hardware with software. We also improved upon our collaboration and communication skills.
What's next for Technottle
There were a few ideas that we had to cut due to time constraints. In the future we would like to implement a haptic feedback device to further catch users' attentions, a gyroscope as an alternate method of detecting drinking from the bottle, and an app that can connect wirelessly using Bluetooth to track statistics, manage notifications, and personalized AI analysis.
