Inspiration
Medication non-adherence is a major healthcare issue, especially among elderly patients and individuals with chronic illnesses. Many emergencies occur simply because medicines are not taken on time. We were inspired to create a smart, affordable system that ensures timely medication reminders and provides emergency alerts to caregivers if the patient fails to respond.
What it does
TECHNO CARETAKER is a smart healthcare monitoring and emergency response system that: Reminds patients to take medicines at scheduled time. Provides audio-visual alerts (LCD, buzzer, LED). Allows patient acknowledgment using a push button. Repeats reminder up to 3 times if ignored. Sends an emergency SMS with Google Maps location link to relatives if medicine is not taken. It ensures patient safety through automated escalation logic.
How we built it
We built the system using: Arduino UNO (Embedded System Platform) DS3231 RTC module for accurate real-time scheduling SIM900A GSM module for remote SMS alert 16x2 LCD for medicine display Push button for patient acknowledgment Buzzer and LED for alert system The system was programmed using Embedded C/C++ in Arduino IDE and follows a time-triggered control architecture.
Challenges we ran into
GPS module not working properly indoors. GSM SMS delay and network issues. Managing multiple module communication simultaneously. Ensuring accurate RTC timing and daily reset logic. Handling retry logic without system crash. We solved indoor GPS issue by implementing fixed-location fallback for demo purposes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully implemented multi-stage reminder system. Developed automatic emergency escalation after 3 failed attempts. Integrated real-time scheduling with GSM-based communication. Created a cost-effective and practical healthcare solution. Built a fully working prototype with real-time SMS alert.
What we learned
Practical implementation of embedded systems. GSM AT command handling. Real-time scheduling using RTC modules. Designing fail-safe healthcare logic. System integration and debugging under hardware constraints.
What's next for TECHNO CARETACKER
Mobile app integration for remote monitoring. Cloud database for maintaining smart health records. AI-based medication compliance prediction. Real GPS tracking with geofencing. Integration with hospital emergency systems. Voice assistant-based medicine confirmation.
