Inspiration

Millions of senior citizens feel left behind in the digital age. They struggle with basic tasks like sending emails, making video calls, or staying safe online — and often feel too embarrassed to ask for help. I wanted to build something that feels like a friendly neighbor: always available, always patient, and always explaining things in the simplest way possible.

What I Learned

How I Built It

TechBuddy is a fullstack Learning Management System (LMS) powered by AI:

Frontend:

  • Built with React.js and styled with Tailwind CSS using a warm neutral theme designed for accessibility
  • Large fonts, high contrast colors, and simplified navigation for senior-friendly experience
  • react-markdown to display AI responses in a clean, readable format
  • React Router for seamless navigation between pages
  • Lucide React for clear and simple icons

Backend:

  • Node.js + Express.js server handling all API requests
  • MongoDB + Mongoose for storing user profiles, tutorials, and quiz results
  • JWT (jsonwebtoken) for secure user authentication
  • bcryptjs for secure password encryption
  • Groq API with Llama 3.3 70B (Meta) model for ultra-fast AI responses powering the chatbot

Challenges I Faced

  • Designing for seniors — Creating a UI simple enough for elderly users while still looking modern required careful design decisions around typography, contrast, and navigation
  • AI Integration — Integrating Groq API with the Llama 3.3 70B model and fine-tuning the prompt to always respond in simple, senior-friendly language
  • Time constraints — Building a complete fullstack application with AI integration in just 2 days required smart prioritization
  • Accessibility first — Rethinking the entire design around the "Warm Neutral" theme to reduce visual fatigue for senior users
