Inspiration
The inspiration for this platform came from the need to break down silos within Vancouver’s tech ecosystem. It’s often challenging to find venues that cater to the needs of various tech events, making it hard for communities to collaborate and share knowledge. After seeing a great concept shared by Toki Hossain about a platform to easily find accessible venues, we immediately set out to build a solution.
What it does
Our platform simplifies the process of finding and booking accessible venues for tech events in Vancouver. It helps event organizers discover venues based on capacity, location, amenities, and accessibility features. By centralizing this information, we aim to bridge the gap between tech communities and make knowledge-sharing more seamless.
How we built it
We built the platform using Next.js and React for the front end, with React Query and Axios handling data fetching. The backend is powered by Node.js and PostgreSQL, ensuring fast and efficient data processing. For mapping and venue location features, we integrated the Google Maps API. Our platform also leverages TailwindCSS for responsive design and user-friendly interfaces.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was managing real-time data updates for venue availability and integrating various accessibility filters. Additionally, ensuring the user interface was intuitive and easy to navigate across different devices took considerable effort. Coordinating between design, development, and project management to stay within our hackathon timeline also proved challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of successfully launching a functional MVP within a short time frame, with core features like venue search, filtering by accessibility, and a responsive design. Another highlight was the seamless integration of Google Maps API, which enhances the user experience by providing visual feedback on venue locations.
What we learned
Through this project, we gained experience in rapid prototyping, as well as deepened our knowledge of full-stack development. We learned to manage cross-functional team efforts, ensuring smooth collaboration between developers, designers, and project managers. Our understanding of user experience design and accessibility requirements also grew as we focused on making the platform inclusive.
What's next for Tech Venue Finder
In the future, we plan to implement user reviews and ratings for venues, as well as a booking system for seamless reservations. Expanding the platform beyond Vancouver to other cities is also on our roadmap, and we’re excited to continue enhancing the platform with feedback from the community.
