The proposed idea is an extension app called “Tech-nically Speaking”. The purpose of the extension is to provide guidance for those less familiar with technology, and guide them through the logistics of common communication interfaces such as Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet. The extension app contains instructions and guide-alongs, and is made to be available in multiple languages. During the pandemic, Canadians have been required to isolate themselves away from family and friends. Many have found ways to stay connected with their loved ones virtually. However, there’s a large demographic of people, such as the older generation, who do not have sufficient experience with technology and aren’t as comfortable using these communication platforms. This may result in them feeling isolated and alone, unable to reach their loved ones as frequently. The app extension we’ve designed can aid in combating this issue, as it provides detailed steps and instructions to teach them all in one accessible location on an easy to navigate platform. Although there may be logistical difficulties with using the extension for the first time, since users may still be unfamiliar with technology at this point, they may still require outside assistance for this portion. However, this would be a one time thing, and afterwards they can become more independent and be able to use their devices on their own, with help from our extension. This will allow the users to not have to rely on others for help as much, and help them stay connected with their loved ones. Additionally, in our specific community in the GTA, there’s a large portion of people who aren’t comfortable with English, and thus face even more difficulties using communication forums when the instructions are in English. According to the 2016 Population Consensus, the most common languages spoken in homes aside from English or French include Cantonese, Mandarin, Punjabi, Tagalog, and Urdu. Thus, the translational aspect of the extension would help with this issue as well, and help a wider demographic.
