Inspiration
As a developer in London, I grew frustrated with fragmented event platforms—paid tools, irrelevant non-tech events, and no easy way to filter by my stack (AI/ML). I wanted a free, community-first space for tech pros to find events that matched their expertise, whether in Berlin, SF, or Sydney.
What it does
Tech Meetup Finder lets users discover tech events (meetups, hackathons, workshops) across 10 major English-speaking tech hubs. Filter by topic, location, difficulty, or date; bookmark events; view speaker profiles; and access post-event resources—all in one intuitive platform.
How we built it
We started with wireframing core pages (Home, Calendar, Event Detail) in Figma, then built the frontend with React for dynamic UI. We integrated Google Maps API for location views, used LocalStorage for persistent bookmarks, and structured data to support multi-filter logic and personalized recommendations.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was syncing filter states across pages—ensuring city/topic selections persisted when navigating between the calendar and event details. We also struggled with timezone normalization for global events, requiring custom logic to display times in the user’s local zone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a seamless filtering system that updates results in real time, built a personalized recommendation engine based on user behavior, and designed a mobile-friendly (desktop-first) UI that prioritizes clarity and ease of use for busy tech professionals.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of state management in React, mastered API integration for third-party tools (LinkedIn, Google Maps), and learned to design for global audiences—balancing consistency with local timezone/location needs. We also refined our user-centric design process, iterating based on feedback from fellow developers.
What's next for this project
We plan to add mobile optimization for on-the-go access, integrate real-time event updates, and expand to more European tech hubs (Paris, Amsterdam). We’re also exploring partnerships with local tech communities to source exclusive event listings and add a peer recommendation feature.
