Inspiration
Our project was deeply inspired by the Girls Generation speech addressing the education crisis in Indonesia. One quote that stood out to us was:
" There are many talented students, but fewer opportunities " This resonated strongly with us. In many cases, students miss out on opportunities not because of their abilities, but due to cultural barriers or economic hardship. As we explored the issue further, we discovered that it aligns with a global concern — highlighted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4: Quality Education.
Motivated by this, we set out to build a solution: Tebar Ilmu — a platform that provides free classes and an AI-powered chatbot to support students with their schoolwork. Our mission is simple: to help bridge the gap and give talented students in Indonesia the opportunities they truly deserve.
What it does
Tebar Ilmu is a digital platform that connects students and volunteer mentors to promote accessible, community-powered learning.
The platform supports two main roles:
Students can browse and join free online classes across a wide variety of topics. From school subjects to creative or practical skills — all without needing to install third-party apps. They also have access to an AI-powered chatbot that helps answer school-related questions or general curiosity, anytime they need it.
Volunteer mentors can create and host classes, setting schedules that fit their availability. After conducting sessions, mentors receive digital certificates as recognition for their contribution. With Tebar Ilmu, we aim to make learning more accessible and give anyone the opportunity to teach and inspire, regardless of background.
How we built it
The creation of TebarIlmu began with a clear vision: to provide free and accessible education for everyone. Our team set out to build a platform that could empower students and lifelong learners through well-structured resources and interactive tools.
To bring this idea to life, we divided our team into four key roles: Project Manager, UI/UX Designer, Frontend Developer, and Backend Developer. Each member played a crucial part in turning our vision into reality. The Project Manager helped us prioritize features based on impact and feasibility, ensuring we stayed focused and within scope.
The UI/UX Designer applied the design thinking approach to understand the needs of our users—especially those with limited access to learning platforms. Through this process, they created clean and intuitive high-fidelity wireframes tailored for ease of use and accessibility.
Once the designs were ready, development began. The frontend was built using Next.js, styled with Tailwind CSS, and enhanced with ShadCN UI and Aceternity UI components to deliver a modern, responsive interface. Meanwhile, the backend was powered by Firebase, allowing us to implement real-time functionality, user authentication, and scalable data handling seamlessly.
Development was done collaboratively and in parallel, ensuring consistent integration between frontend and backend. The result is TebarIlmu — a free education platform designed to make quality learning reachable for all.
Challenges we ran into
At the beginning, we were unsure how to build a realistic product within just 30 hours that could address a long-term, complex issue like education inequality. There were so many critical steps we couldn’t skip; brainstorming, UI/UX design, coding, building the pitch deck, and more. With such limited time, it was definitely overwhelming — but that’s the fun of a hackathon!
We eventually managed to organize ourselves by splitting responsibilities and staying focused on what mattered most. In the end, we’re proud of the results we achieved in such a short time.
Another key challenge was figuring out how to incorporate innovative technology, AI, in a meaningful way. We didn’t want to just include it for the sake of trends. After some ideation, we found the right path: integrating an AI-powered chatbot to help students with their school tasks and questions, offering them support anytime, in a simple, accessible way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of our achievements was successfully building an in-app meeting system, allowing users to join online classes directly, without the need of installing a third party app. This greatly improves accessibility, especially for students in low-resource environments.
We're also proud to have taken part in this hackathon and contributed to a meaningful cause. Being able to work toward solving Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education through technology has been both exciting and fulfilling.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned so much about what it takes to bring a real solution to life in a very limited amount of time. From brainstorming ideas to designing user experiences and putting the platform together, we realized the importance of good teamwork, clear roles, and constant communication. We also discovered how valuable it is to stay adaptable, explore new ideas (like integrating AI), and make thoughtful decisions under pressure.
Most importantly, this experience taught us how powerful collaboration can be — and how much we can achieve when we combine creativity, purpose, and passion to solve real-world problems.
What's next for Tebar Ilmu
As for now, Tebar Ilmu is still in its early stage, and there’s plenty of room for growth. Our next goal is to officially launch the platform and make it accessible to students across Indonesia.
Once the website is polished, we plan to develop a mobile app version for users who prefer learning through mobile devices. We also aim to introduce more impactful features to further support both students and mentors alike.
In the future, we hope to expand beyond the educational support and explore ways to make a difference in students’ economic situations — possibly by reintroducing a scholarship feature to directly support those in need.
