Inspiration

I was inspired by the TED talk "Hacking Hackathons: how everyone can contribute to innovation" by Angela Bee Chan where she described her experiences going to hackathons. One of the things she mentioned in her talk was a "minimum viable team" which is a team whose members have certain skills necessary to succeed in the hackathon. She categorized these members into the "hustler", "hacker", and "hipster". Hustlers handle the presentation and communication of the project to the audience. Hackers build the solution to the problem being solved. Hipsters design the user experience. This is where my inspiration came for coder, presenter, and designer.

What it does

When a participant signs up for a hackathon on the Devpost website they have the option of selecting that they are interested in being placed into either the coder, presenter, or designer roles. Each role is represented as a badge that is displayed on their profile. Users can filter through teammates by badge to make it easier to find people who will satisfy certain roles in the team.

How we built it

It has not been built. It is just a proof of concept at this stage.

Challenges we ran into

None.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is my first hackathon. So I am just proud of myself for participating.

What we learned

I learned a lot about hackathons when researching for this project. The most important lesson I realized is that anyone can contribute to a team even if they feel their skills are not on par with their teammates. Everyone has their own unique skills that are just as valuable as others when utilized in the right context.

What's next for Teammate Role Selection Tool

If I make my own platform for hosting hackathons I will consider integrating this tool into my website.
