Executive Summary
This report discusses team eight’s enhancements/ modifications made to the Universal Orlando mobile application, for the SHPE 2021 Innovation Challenge. The scope of this project was to Innovate, Impact, and Build a product or service that helps address the advancements in technology within the Entertainment Technology Industry.
The basis of study for our design was to create a more user-friendly mobile application for guests with special needs. Specifically, vision loss being among the top ten disabilities, we decided to optimize the Universal Orlando App to better accommodate these individuals.
After researching we found the majority of people with vision impairment and blindness are over the age of 50 years; however, vision loss can affect people of all ages. As of 2012, 4.2 million Americans aged 40 years and older suffer from uncorrectable vision impairment, out of which 1.02 million who are blind; this number is predicted to be more than double by 2050 to 8.96 million due to the increasing epidemics of diabetes and other chronic diseases and our rapidly aging U.S. population.
While brainstorming the details of how we could modify the mobile application, we came to the conclusion that our biggest concern was to create an accessibility tab within the applications settings. Once selected, it will redirect you to the accessibility features where you can customize your Universal Orlando App to better fit your individual needs. Having options such as Voice Over, to speak directly to the app instead of navigating through touch. Also incorporating Spoken Content, to have the app directly read aloud what’s being displayed on the screen; to Utilizing the Bluetooth feature on cellular devices to connect to any hearing aids/ devices.
We concluded that incorporation of these enhancements to the Universal Orlando application would deliver a much more positive vacation experience and in hopes attract more guests to visit. Along with that, it could increase the safety of the people with special needs because during the covid19 people with special needs suffered a lot because people refrained from helping them in case of getting covid due to close proximity. This app would make them feel more independent and inclusive.
