Inspiration
Our inspiration for creating MentorConneXion stemmed from the profound impact mentorship can have on individuals pursuing careers in STEAM fields. Recognizing the administrative challenges faced by STEAM SuperHeroes in coordinating mentor-mentee relationships, we aimed to develop a solution that streamlines the mentorship process. By automating matching, scheduling, and engagement tracking, we sought to empower the organization to focus more on their core mission: nurturing the next generation of STEAM innovators.
What It Does
MentorConneXion is a comprehensive platform that automates the mentorship lifecycle for STEAM SuperHeroes. It intelligently matches mentors and mentees based on detailed criteria such as availability, location, age, and personal preferences. The system schedules meetings, sends calendar invites, and manages notifications via email. It also tracks meeting occurrences, cancellations, and collects feedback, providing valuable metrics for reporting and analysis. By centralizing these processes, MentorConneXion reduces manual effort, minimizes errors, and enhances the overall mentorship experience.
How We Built It
We built MentorConneXion using a suite of AWS services to ensure scalability and reliability:
- AWS Lambda: Serverless functions handle matching algorithms, scheduling, notifications, and data processing.
- Amazon DynamoDB: A NoSQL database stores participant information, pairings, schedules, and meeting statuses.
- Amazon S3: Serves as a storage solution for input files and data exports.
- Amazon SES: Sends automated emails for notifications, confirmations, and reminders.
- Python: The primary programming language for Lambda functions, leveraging libraries for time zone handling and email formatting.
- AWS IAM: Manages secure access and permissions for AWS resources. We followed a modular approach, implementing high-priority features first and planning for future enhancements. The system is designed with scalability in mind, allowing for easy integration of additional functionalities.
Challenges We Ran Into
- Complex Matching Criteria: Implementing detailed matching algorithms to account for various preferences and constraints required meticulous planning and testing.
- Time Zone Management: Handling participants across different time zones and ensuring accurate scheduling was a significant challenge.
- Automated Notifications: Designing a robust notification system that could handle various scenarios, such as schedule proposals, confirmations, and cancellations, was intricate.
- User Engagement: Facilitating smooth communication between mentors and mentees without a dedicated user interface required creative solutions. ## Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
