Inspiration

When I applied for the competition, I wanted to see if there were similar projects or features regarding the challenge I was doing. And on my search, I found this website: https://www.teamusa.com/map, which is a hometown finder based on the athletes in the Olympic & Paralympic Games Paris 2024. I saw that it was something that users can do to relate themselves with an athlete, but I want to take it a step further. I want to take that concept and apply it on a historical level, where users can find athletes in the past in their own hometown.

What it does

I created an interactive map where users can see where users can click on states and cities to view athletes in that area. There are also filters where users can look at specific sports/events and even what year and winter/summer Olympic/Paralympic. Alongside I also create an analytical tool at the bottom where users can learn more on a nuber basis and can see trends between different years and how much the Team USA grew.

How we built it

I built it utilizing Google AI Studio along with the Gemini browser to help me find sample data and sound ideas. I created a website where users can understand the goal of the project, then enter the application itself

Challenges we ran into

The major challenge I faced was gathering sample data to use and test, especially finding the hometown of each athlete. That is something Gemini was not excellent at, but I decided to focus more on the utility of the website rather than the data itself.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am really proud of the interactive map that was created by Gemini. There were some issues with it, causing too much lag or not displaying something correctly. But after some changes, it was fixed. Another problem was displaying the athletes in the list. It was causing too much lag when loading everything in one go, but after learning about lazy loading, I implemented it to help reduce the amount of loading the site has to do.

What we learned

I learned that Gemini is a great way to get the skeleton of an app made, a solid way to fix small issues, and even recommendations about problems I notice regarding accessibility and wording.

What's next for Team USA on the map

For me, I want to improve this app to handle real data and have the ability to easily update itself. Along that, I really want to update the interactive map to allow the users to see the terrain and how it helps fosters Team USA.
