Inspiration
Team Trees and many other charities have done a fantastic job of bringing in people to donate and plant trees worldwide. Not only are these charities helping our world become greener, the contributors and donors play a big role. We wanted to show these contributors and donors the change they are making through a visual representation of their impact.
What it does
Team Threes is a visually interactive website that shows you the different trees that the charities have planted. People who have funded or contributed to planting these trees will be able to search for the trees planted under their name. Through the website, they will be able to see some basic information about the trees that were planted.
How we built it
We used Three.js a JavaScript library that creates 3D objects and animations. We manipulated these 3D objects to represent the Earth and set points around the 3D object as coordinates around it.
Challenges we ran into
Man-power. We were completely new to the scene, so we ran into choosing a project blindly. Learning a completely new library was definitely challenging but we both had so much fun doing it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to come up with a finished demo that is visually beautiful and interactive. It was a completely new library for the entire team, and we were able to reflect on our learnings from this project.
What we learned
We learned a lot about git and project management. Learning to allocate tasks in a team and knowing how to plan and implement a project was a challenge.
What's next for Team Threes
Team Threes will require more data points from the tree-planting charities in the future to provide more accurate locations of where the trees are, information about the trees, and some basic information about the donors that have funded these trees.
