Inspiration
My inspiration for APEX Academy came from my own experience when I first got into Formula 1. I spent countless hours watching YouTube videos, reading complicated rules, and following multiple race weekends just to understand how the sport worked.
While I enjoyed the process, I realized how overwhelming it could be for someone completely new to F1. I wanted to create something that would make learning the sport easier, faster, and more engaging for newer fans.
That's how APEX Academy was born: a platform where you don't just read about Formula 1, you experience it.
What it does
APEX Academy is an interactive Formula 1 learning platform designed to introduce new fans to the sport through exploration and gameplay.
Users can discover all 11 F1 teams and 22 drivers, test their reaction times in Lights Out, experience qualifying in The Flying Lap, and compete in a Four Seasons Championship against 14 AI-controlled opponents.
Each championship season introduces different challenges, from extreme summer heat and slippery winter conditions to autumn debris and spring humidity, helping players experience how changing conditions affect racing.
How we built it
We built APEX Academy using React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and Vite, with GitHub for version control and Vercel for deployment.
We developed custom racing mechanics, including acceleration, steering, collision detection, lap tracking, and championship scoring. The AI-controlled opponents use rule-based behavior to navigate the track and react to other cars.
We also implemented interactive animations, 3D racing environments, and browser-generated audio to create an immersive Formula 1 experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was creating racing mechanics that felt realistic while remaining accessible to beginners.
Developing 14 AI-controlled opponents, implementing different environmental effects for each season, and maintaining consistent gameplay required extensive testing and debugging.
We also encountered challenges with browser compatibility, audio playback, performance optimization, and navigation between different game modes.
Balancing technical functionality with an engaging user experience was a major part of the development process.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of transforming a personal passion for Formula 1 into a fully functional, interactive learning platform.
Building two Academy challenges, a 3D qualifying experience, and a complete Four Seasons Championship with 14 AI-controlled opponents was a major achievement.
But our biggest accomplishment is creating something we wish existed when we first started following Formula 1, making the sport more accessible and enjoyable for new fans.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we strengthened our skills in React, TypeScript, game development, rule-based AI, browser audio, and web deployment.
We learned how challenging it can be to combine interactive gameplay with educational content, especially when managing multiple game states, autonomous opponents, and environmental effects.
Most importantly, we learned that learning doesn't always have to involve reading or watching tutorials. Sometimes, the best way to understand something is to experience it firsthand.
What's next for TEAM SPYDER
Our vision for APEX Academy goes beyond its current features.
We plan to introduce additional interactive modules covering aerodynamics, braking systems, tire strategies, pit stops, and race strategy, allowing users to explore the more technical aspects of Formula 1.
We also want to improve the racing physics, expand the gameplay experience, and make the platform more accessible across different devices and browsers.
Ultimately, TEAM SPYDER wants to develop APEX Academy into a comprehensive, interactive learning platform that makes Formula 1 approachable for anyone, regardless of their experience with the sport.
