Inspiration

We were inspired by the issue of mental health/well-being and social isolation, which has been exacerbated by the turbulent times of COVID-19, where people feel more disconnected and lonely.

What it does

Wall of Anonymity is a web application that allows users to connect with others. Users can either share their stories/rants with each other or simply just have a chat!

Read our Readme on Github for more details on our web application and how it aligns to the problem statement :)

How we built it

The front-end of this project was built using HTML, CSS, Javascript as well as the Bootstrap library. For the backend, in order to facilitate multi-user interactions in real-time (so that whatever someone posts or says in the chat can be seen by others), we used sockets to establish 2-way real-time, event-based communication between the client and server which will then allow multiple clients to communicate with one another. In order to do this, we used the sockets.io library in our node.js program.

Whenever a user posts a note, the message is being wrapped around in HTML code to create an HTML element. The HTML is then prepended to the section under "Latest Posts" so that the newer posts are displayed on top. The use of socket.io then allows the same post to be displayed for all users on the same server. The concept is the same for chat messages, with the exception of wrapping them in HTML code to create HTML elements.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was time-constraints, which led to an inability to fully implement all of the features that we had envisioned and hoped to see come through. Another challenge was that as this was both our first hackathon, and it was challenging to find a way where we can work in parallel in the area of technical implementation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our biggest accomplishment is probably not giving up and being able to still submit something in this hackathon :D

What we learned

One of our team members learnt how to use Github for the first time! We also learnt how to use bootstrap and socket.io in our technical implementations for front-end and back-end respectively.

What's next for Team Orange Not Apple (117)

More hackathons!
