Inspiration💡
The inspiration for this app came from a desire to address the growing problem of phishing scams, particularly those targeting the elderly population. We wanted to create an engaging and informative experience that could help users recognize and avoid these phishing scams.
What it does🤔
The app immediately plunges the user into a simulated phishing attack, highlighting the ease that individuals can be tricked with. After falling for the initial trap, users are presented with an educational page explaining phishing and given the opportunity to "redeem" themselves by continuing. This leads to a yes/no questionnaire, presenting realistic phishing email examples in contrast to the initial app interface. Upon completion, the user is congratulated on a final screen with some takeaway information.
How we built it 💻
We built our app using code.org as this was also our first experience with coding. We initially drew out the UI as a draft and put all the pages together on the website.
Challenges we ran into 🔄
The biggest challenge we faced was a change in direction where we decided to start fresh and find a new issue to tackle which was catered towards the palate of the elderly. We came together and accepted that our last app wasn’t relevant to the issue at hand and chose to redirect ourselves to where we are now.
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆
As a group, we are proud of creating an app from scratch given that we had no prior experience. Together, we successfully designed a user experience that captures the user's attention as well as teaches them an important topic.
What we learned 🧠
Through this project, we have all gained lots of useful experience to apply in our futures. These skills range from collaboration and time management to coding and app design. Throughout our process, we also realized that communication is extremely important to avoid misunderstandings as well as ensuring that ensure everyone is on the same page.
What's next for Hook'd 🚀
In our future, we plan on taking a visit to local retirement homes presenting our project and spreading the word of phishing prevention. We hope to be able to inform as many people as possible to combat the abuse of our elders. We also plan on adding additional features to make the app a more immersive experience.
