Compress +

Inspiration

Thermal energy is loss through the compressors from Air-conditioners. We wondered if we could reduce energy wastage through transfering heat to processes that make use of it.

What is it ?

Modular unit that utilises waste heat generated by air conditioning unit to heat residential water tanks

What are it's materials ?

In our added radiator, we used a double layered stainless steel with rock wool in-between to insulate heat. This is to ensure durability, tapping on stainless steel's corrosion resistant property. The rock wool also minimises heat loss to the surroundings.

The Prototype

The prototype was a proof-of-concept that aimed to show the process of heat exchange between hot air and cool water, between a compressor and radiator.

How we built it

We modelled our prototype using everyday items Hot air from the compressor - hot air from hairdryer Water in radiator - water in a insulated container (styrofoam box) Double layered, insulated pipe - metal straw We used hot air from a hairdryer to blow through a metal straw, that is submerged underwater. The change in water temperature was monitored by an Arduino system ( DS18B20 Digital Temperature Sensor + Arduino Uno). To show that the prototype works, we should observe the heat transfer from the hot air to water.

Challenges we ran into

1) Familarising ourselves with C++ to operate the Arduino system 2) Sourcing for additional materials with very limited time

Accomplishments that we're proud of

1) Our prototype works

What we learned

1) Ways to apply our knowledge and skill sets to find solutions in status quo 2) Using everyday items in showcasing our proof of concept
