Inspiration
Global emissions increased x 18 times carbon dioxide since 1900 (1). Nevertheless, we are in the year 2020 and facing our biggest pandemic crisis. Denmark has one of the largest cycling community. For every 10km of vehicle travel, it produces 1 m³ of Co² (2). Choosing cycling each day has not only reduces carbon emissions but also maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Anxiety post-COVID-19 will most likely run high in communities as people return back to their workplaces. Everyone will prefer using personal cars or bikes over public transport further aggravating traffic congestions. Many commuters will likely choose cars to avoid the risk of infection at jammed intersections and bike lanes. Here, BeBiker would like to empower cycling as being fun, healthy and safe, no matter if you are a cyclist as well as a world community that cares about our air pollution.
What it does
We are working on an application that captures bike patterns gathers and presents real-time bike traffic data along with alternative route suggestions, speed suggestions, best time to start a journey and recently appropriate distance. The application also sends notifications if they are approaching a congested portion of a bike lane or an intersection. Cities and public institutions could use this data to make decisions on where they need to bolster the bike infrastructure.
How I built it
We will be using all relevant data both from the static and real-time feed to our app. In collaborating with Urban Radar, we will be also getting some data exchanges in order to have a much more accurate and reliable resource for our users. We are aiming to have a medium-fidelity prototype of the application ready for the final submission.
Challenges
In such a short time during Hackathon, we are unable to dive deeper into our prototype user experience and some business models to reach out to potential partners other than the existing organizations in Hackathon.
Accomplishments
Overnight, we were able to receive a great number of responses to boost us into developing this product as we have more than 70% responses which would love to use this app. Their main interest has also aligned greatly with ours which is climate change and at the same time being safe (especially after the pandemic).
What I learned
We have definitely learned to listen and engage our users. Nevertheless, we have learned to think outside of the box and be proactive!
What's next for Team BeBiker
We are grateful to be able to focus this application in one of the city which has the highest cyclist rate among. This has also set a great deal of examples to the other part of the world.
