Inspiration
Inspired by our love for chips, Team Chip's sole purpose is to save and earn enough money for some chips. We put this love into action with our two applications, DataChips and ChipsWatch.
What it does
We are proposing an interactive visual data dashboard that analyzes violent crime occurrences. This dashboard will enable police divisions to gain comprehensive awareness of the criminal landscape in their vicinity, thereby equipping emergency officers with the necessary information to prepare for and respond to crimes more effectively. In addition, we are proposing a mobile application that facilitates the dissemination of this critical information in real-time, allowing officers on duty to access insights and predict criminal behaviors more accurately.
How we built it
Using React-Native and React, we split up to form two applications that work hand in hand to provide information and insights. Both applications derive their data from the same database. React-Native was used to build the mobile app ChipsWatch, whereas React was used to form the website.
Challenges we ran into
As beginners to programming, let alone software engineering, we were intimidated by the scope of the problem statements and the competitive nature of the hackathon. As Business Analytics students, we found solace in the problem statement under the subtheme "Strengthening Domestic Security" as it was most familiar to our limited experiences. Despite some knowledge of data analysis and optimization, we struggled to put our concepts into practice.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that we did not give up and persevered despite the limited time provided. Parama personally picked a whole new language in 5 hours. Mya was able to create and use a Map API for the first time. Shanice refreshed her skills in Tableau, making her an expert and leading us.
What we learned
There's a brutal world in the field of software engineering and computing, but many resources are widely available, and treading down the path taken by many before us was tedious yet insightful.
What's next for Team Chips
Immediately after this hackathon, we have to return to Orbital '24, which was where all of us got our first taste of software engineering. The mad rush to putting a project together has taught us many valuable skills (both technical and philosophical). We will look forward to carrying our experiences over to finishing Orbital.
