Inspiration
What is the truth, in the context of today? Given that all news outlets and publishers practically only care about their agenda, writing stories full of false statements to beef up the emotional impact of a story. Since fake news comes from the publishers themselves, it's we as people who read the news who are responsible for fact-checking everything we read. We created a simple, easy-to-use extension utilising complex AI models for news readers and all of us to make sure we're reading the truth.
What it does
This extension compares the statement or paragraph we input with articles across multiple news sources and publicly available databases of statements confirmed to be true or false. Simply install it on your Chromium-based browsers, and it works like magic.
How we built it
The backbones of the extension are Python and JavaScript -- more specifically, the React framework. React allows us to build a simple and intuitive face of the extension, while Python is the driving force beneath, the language used for servers and some of important codes of the AI models used. The AI models we use are BERT, LIME, and Google's fact-checking API.
Challenges we ran into
The extension sometimes refused to communicate with the server -- and that's just one among some of the problems we initially encountered. However, we rose above the occasion, making sure that we could deliver a perfectly working extension, by working through the nights.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It's our first project that we work together as a team that involves building an AI-based Chrome extension. It's something that we're proud of doing.
What we learned
We learned the importance of teamwork. Successful teamwork involves coordinative collaboration, with the ability to communicate and talk. It also involves selfless dedication, helping each other as needed, and supporting each other as we progress. We learned that successful teamwork does not come from individuals working on one's tasks, but rather us working together as a group.
What's next for Team 39_xAI Factcheck
We're looking to extend the functionality of this extension while keeping it lightweight. Adding features, such as image detection, as well as increasing the accuracy of our algorithms, is what we aspire to do.
