The US economy is a booming one. But underneath its prosperity is the story behind the real people working within this everlasting financial loop; from those in the top 1% in society to those who barely live off of minimum wages. This drastic wealth gap inspired us, specifically the topic of race in relation to the communities who always seemed to remain at the bottom of this financial loop despite the changing times. Inspired by this issue, we wanted to bring awareness and attention to how the racial wealth gap works and more information behind financial inequality, a prevalent yet widely ignored issue. Our website is called "The Financial Report". In our website we have three main pages: a home page, Statistics page, and a solutions page. On our home page we provide information as to what the racial wealth gap is and strive to educate those who read our website about this issue and the reasons behind why it exists. On our statistics page we provide two specific examples of the African American and Hispanic communities, detailing their historical background with this issue as well as major factors that cause the wealth gap to continually increase within their specific communities. Along with this information we provide graphs and data so that our website users can visualize the true effects of the wealth gap in different areas. Finally we have our solutions page, where we detail different steps users can take to help reduce the wealth gap in their society, no matter how small the step may be. Some challenges we ran into involved the interactiveness of the buttons on our website, as well as some stylistic elements. Because we are beginner coders, we coded the website mainly from scratch and had some trouble figuring out the details and getting past some syntax errors. However we are extremely proud with the resulting website we have come up with. Not only did we problem solve our errors and get past them, we were also able to create a website that we visualized on our own. As beginner coders and a part of the community, we are proud to have created something that we not only consider an accomplishment to us but as something we believe can be used as a starting tool to help the disadvantaged communities around us receive the equality and social justices they deserve; even if it is as simple as spreading awareness, knowledge, and solutions about a specific issue. Throughout this hackathon and while coding "The Financial Report", we learned many new things about coding different aspects of a website, such as its interactiveness and its stylistic elements. We learned how important it was to make our website clear and style it in a way where the audience will understand its content. From our research on financial inequality within racial communities, we learned a lot more information on this issue, for while creating our website to educate others we also ended up educated ourselves in the process. The next step for the Financial Report would be to take the following step after raising awareness, which is application in the real world. We see the financial report next reporting live data and results of carrying out various solutions to solve the wealth gap in the real world. We really want to be able to take action next and grow and expand our website, maybe even to have representatives of these financially disadvantaged communities to speak of their experiences and spread awareness to others within our website. Through our website we believe that any impact, no matter how small or big, can truly achieve incredible things and bring us one step closer to solving the problem of racial financial inequality in the face of social injustice.
