Inspiration

Indigenous youth represent 50% of children under four years old in the welfare system (Maclean’s, 2017). Although identifying as Indigenous is associated with 47% higher odds of being homeless compared to being involved in the child welfare system, which increases the odds by more than four times (OR=4.15), Indigenous children are more than four times more likely to have been involved with the welfare system compared to non-indigenous white people (Alberton et al., 2020).

What it does

This pilot intervention aims to improve Indigenous representation and employment perspectives for Indigenous youth in Ottawa at risk of or experiencing homelessness through mentorship services at Indigenous centres located throughout the city of Ottawa.
