Team 15: Woof Woof! Improving Communication at PennVet

SD2016 Youtube Link When starting out our project with PennVet, our goal was to provide detailed data analytics to identify the bottlenecks and focus points within the workflow of the hospital, focusing on ancillary services such as Radiology, Pharmacy, Anesthesia etc. After several weeks of observations (60 hours) within various services (Radiology, Pharmacy, Surgery and Dentistry) our problem statement changed. We decided to shift our focus toward a more tangible issue within the workflow: communication between services particularly Radiology! The lack of effective communication negatively impacts, patients, students and owners who are unable to get the teaching that they want or are required to be put under sedation for longer periods of time. To solve this problem we will be creating a ranked queuing notification system using Python, Javascript and Amazon Web Services to create a web platform where the clinician can fill out a request this request is then processed by our algorithm to rank and determine the wait time for the clinician who is then notified. The radiologist will also receive a ranked queue to help them plan their day. Through our system, every important party will be updated and aware of the situation and current position of their patient in the queue. Further applications include implementing a machine learning algorithm once more data is gathered regarding the wait time for different types of x-rays. We also believe that this platform can easily be slightly transform to fit the need of other ancillary services like pharmacy.
