Inspiration

We've all felt it, that awkward moment when you are put in a Zoom break out room and no one speaks for 30 minutes. Staring around your empty room and back to that row of mute black screens you're thinking "this is not the university experience I was promised." Our social lives have undoubtedly taken a hit since covid. It's been harder to connect with people and make friends, important parts of university that we've been missing out on.

With hybrid learning and online sessions becoming the new normal, we realised that this problem isn't going away anytime soon. Students don't have the opportunity for organic interactions that we used to have. It's no longer possible to mingle before and after lectures when everyone is watching from their bed...

What it does

UCLocals is an app that will foster connections between students at UCL. Any student can log onto the app and see who is active and on campus. They can filter through students by year level, degree course, societies and modes (ghost, study, socialise, eat) to find people to send a message to and meet up with. Imagine if you were thinking about joining the rock climbing club but you wanted to know what it would be like. You could search for someone on the app who is active and in the club, ask them to meet and maybe leave with a new friend and a hobby. If you were thinking about taking a particular module but wanted to know what will be like from a fellow student, you could search for people in your degree a year ahead of you to chat with. Students will be able to choose their status from ghost mode, study, socialise, and eat. If the student is in ghost mode, no one will be able to search for them. If they have one of the other modes activated other students will be able to see what 'mood' they are in, if they want to study or chill or are looking to meet up with people to get food.

UCLocals takes the best from 3 social media networks to serve the UCL community, Facebook (find someone near you) and Snapchat (location data) and Clubhouse (casual way to schedule meetups). UCLocals provides UCL students opportunities make new friends and build meaningful connections.
