The medical information section that links seniors to the Medicare website for a quick reference!
Inspiration
We were inspired because some of our grandparents have difficulty managing the internet and don't know what sources are safe. This led to us creating a website intended for senior citizens who weren't aware of "fake news" or government programs that could really help them!
What it does
This website is a clean and simple go-to-source for the senior citizens of Sunnyvale, CA. It has information and links to translation services for official documents, information on tax documents, current events that pertain to them, protecting themselves from fake news, and government medical sites where they can find more information on Medicare and Medicaid.
How we built it
We built this website using HTML, CSS, a Google Translate API, and Github.
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble centering the lower pictures on the home page ("Fake News Alert!" and "News for You") and weren't able to fix it before time ran out. In the beginning, we also had a lot of difficulty using CSS to format the website. We also ran out of time to format our "Translation Services" page. This may not be a a coding problem, but our final video ran a little bit over five minutes because we were unable to edit it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of everything, because it was the first website for two of us. We learned to work as a team to design the entire website and helped each other out when there were problems we couldn't solve on our own. We're particularly proud of fixing the formatting in our website, because it took us a very long time.
~~~Natalia: I'm proud that I got to learn how to code HTML and CSS and to meet new friends along the way!
~~~Sahana: I'm proud that I gained some experience in Hackathons!
~~~Hannah: I'm proud that I got better at CSS! I always had a hard time using it, but I feel like I've really improved.
What we learned
We learned to code and design a website collaboratively! We learned how to use FlexBoxes and implementing APIs.
What's next for Team 13 - Senior Support!
~~~Natalia: I'm going to stay in contact with my new friends and I had a lot fun! I'm planning on learning more about coding applications in biochemistry.
~~~Sahana: I want to keep participating in Hackathons and improving my coding skills.
~~~Hannah: I want to improve my CSS skills and also start learning JavaScript! I plan on improving my Python skills this summer as well.
We'll definitely stay in contact after this experience! It was really fun talking while we coding and helping each other with our different specialities. We're really glad we got to meet each other and had a lot of fun creating this website :)
