Inspiration

We are a multilingual team, and we wanted our project to reflect that. So naturally, we decided to build something centered around languages.

What it does

Unlike a certain popular green owl language app, WordTree focuses more on collaboration between users. Users can contribute to a shared language tree by adding new words and translations. They can also message other users using the words that have been added to the tree. And if existing languages aren't enough, you can even create your own language or use it as an archive to ensure it’ll stay alive digitally.

How we built it

We split into two teams Backend & Frontend; Backend - handled MongoDB integration, WebSockets, and the server-side functionality. Frontend - handled the UI/UX and connected everything to the frontend. Overall, the project was built using JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Node.js, Express, and MongoDB.

Challenges we ran into

Everyone uses a different IDE and development setup, so getting the project to launch consistently across everyone's devices was surprisingly challenging.

A lot of our time was spent figuring out the classic: "It works on my computer."

Accomplishments that we're proud of

3D spinning tree, so fun! & Fast and almost instant messaging feature.

What we learned

We learned a lot about the potential of coding alongside AI, whether it was helping us turn an idea into something real or helping us figure out why something suddenly stopped working.

We also got to experience what a hackathon is actually like, especially since this was the first hackathon for most of our team.

What's next for TEAM-1-WordTree

There are still a lot of things we'd love to add: Integration with an actual translation service for more accurate words, translations, and descriptions Proper profile pictures and a friend system Word games that you can play with friends Group chats Better moderation tools And, of course, more ways to grow the tree. 🌳
