Inspiration

Underfunded teachers is an ongoing problem in our education system. School supplies allotted to teachers are neither enough for the number of students nor last until the end of the school year. We have sympathy for our educators who pay for the difference out of their pockets just to provide us students with what we need for a thriving school environment.

What it does

Happy Learners aims to allow teachers to list their supplies online, shop from other teachers' listings, and be connected to teachers within their locality to promote sustainable practices like renting instead of purchasing. Connecting the teachers to each other also helps foster a community.

How we built it

We followed the format of a renting marketplace app and tailored it to our idea. We use Node.js as our environment and programmed with Typescript.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating frontend to backend was something we were new to, and ran into issues with developing them from separate workspaces initially. Knowledge constraints also made it challenging to resolve problems within the time frame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Collaborating and creating the base for first hackathon project together is something we were all excited for as we began to understand what it meant to work with other programmers on remote repositories.

What we learned

Collaborative coding is a great lesson we learned and will continue to improve upon as we all move forward in our endeavors. Working on repositories while trying new languages and frameworks have helped us make a baseplate for an idea we know would be impactful.

What's next for Happy Learners

Creating this project helped point out gaps in our knowledge and we want to address those to make sure that we return to Happy Learners with a smarter approach. This app has great potential and we all agree that materializing it is something worth working towards.
