Inspiration
Many ALANA students are devoid of academic help from fellow ALANA members. We took inspiration from COMS mentor program. Our website strives to improve that experience by making it easier to request help from a mentor
What it does
Our site gives students a way to easily request help from a community of mentors. Requests are stored and clearly visible on the site, with a mentee's email to allow communication between mentor and mentee.
How we built it
We used React js, Express js, Node js, and a mySQL database. React js was our frontend and Express js/Node js was our backend.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenges we ran into were in the development of our Express js server. It was our first time developing in Express, so we ran into many issues that we had never seen before. Particularly, learning how to run SQL queries through Express js was a large problem that took us a long time to figure out.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Connecting React js to Express js to the mySQL database is the accomplishment we are most proud of. Seeing the frontend correctly connect to the backend and make the website functional was a very proud moment.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Express js and its capabilities.
What's next for Teach Me
Improving the UI would most likely be the first improvement to make. Also, we had many ideas that we could not implement due to time constraints, such as a possible chat feature between mentors and mentees and a 30 minute session scheduler.
