Inspiration
The game's concept was inspired by the enduring popularity of collectible card games, specifically citing franchises like Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering. It was designed to cater to core psychological hooks of collectors: "The Completionist" who wants to achieve 100% collection, and "The Investor" who capitalizes on the real-world trend of trading cards becoming high-value financial assets.
What it does
TCG Shop: The Card Game is a simulation and management game where players build a card shop empire by utilizing card-based mechanics.
- Business Management: Players use a "Business Deck" to govern all administrative decisions, drawing cards to expand floor space, buy furniture, market the shop, hire employees, and barter with customers.
- Card Battles: Players simultaneously collect and build decks for an in-universe trading card game called Duel Demons. They compete in daily tournaments, PvP matches, and friendly games to earn capital and build shop notoriety.
- The Core Loop: The game creates a cyclical loop where playing matches funds retail expansion, and managing the store generates capital to buy more booster packs.
How we built it
The provided document is a conceptual design pitch so we've not built it yet, but we're excited to take it to the next step regardless.
Challenges we ran into
GDD's always make us think about the second to second details of a game and working through the challenges takes a lot of thought, but we think we've done a great job.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're happy with the overall visual identity and retention hooks for this project, we really think we have something interesting here.
What we learned
Creating something more focused on user retention, rather than a single gameplay mechanic for a multiplayer first environment, it's made us think in various ways of how we can best have an enjoyable space, while keeping users interested and focused.
What's next for TCG Shop : The Card Game
- Real-Time Player-to-Player Trading and Markets: The implementation of dedicated trading rooms where players can negotiate card-for-card swaps or partial currency deals live with friends or global collectors.
- Augmented Reality (AR) Card Display: The addition of AR features using mobile devices or headsets, allowing players to project their customized shop layouts and 3D pop-out models of their rarest "Shiny" or holofoil cards onto real-world surfaces.
- Dedicated Story Mode: A single-player campaign featuring fully-voiced NPCs and deep lore. Players would progress from an amateur shopkeeper in a small town all the way up to battling elite corporate card syndicates.
