Inspiration

There is a documented decline in literary and critical thinking skills in students. We want to help mitigate this problem by allowing room for critical thinking and teaching students how to use AI ethically.

What it does

A teacher would assign an assignment, then provide a student with a code to access that assignment, where the student would then be able to work on the assignment on the website. A key feature of this is that the student would be able to use a guardrail AI (Gemini 3.5 in this case for costs) to be able to help out with their homework, but this AI doesn’t provide any solutions; instead, it provides mitigations for how the student can approach the given problem, and in the background on the teacher’s end, it also tracks how often the student copies and pastes, tabs out of the website, & finally how many times the student asked the AI for help.

How we built it

We built this assignment using an HTML framework to build the site, as well as using node.js and express.js to be able to handle the movement of the website for the teacher and student end; along with this, we used Supabase to handle the storage of the program. In addition to this, we also used the Gemini 3.5 model for the AI chatbot to provide helpful input when a student runs into a problem with the given question.

Challenges we ran into

Setting up the AI model to be able to interact with the user(student) side of things; additionally we had a bunch of confliction issues with our GitHub repository for allowing us to share files effectively. Another major problem that we ran into was getting the server side set up with the integration of requests being processed between the student and teacher, as well as finding a way to be able to handle the AI reading the database and then pushing that request further.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud we have a working finished product that has the capacity for future additions that can help students use AI more ethically.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate front-end & back-end development with the integration of an AI model into our code, as well as finding a good balance of the HTML environment with server-side dependencies.

What's next for TBYF Writing Assistant

Put more features for teacher support such as making another tab for teacher submissions, storing student chats with the AI so the teacher can review, and make the UI cleaner.
