Inspiration

The inspiration for this project revolves around the academic research we are involved in related to aqueous and gaseous phase adsorption as well as modifying adsorbents to collect high quantities of target pollutants.

What it does

This initiative up-cycles food waste into an incredibly versatile material (activated carbon) which is commonly found throughout many industries such as water treatment, air purification, food and beverage processing, space vessels and many more.

How we built it

The video was created using Final Cut Pro.

Challenges we ran into

Articulating the chemistry-heavy background and process in an understandable manner within the time limit.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We believe this idea has real world benefits which encompass all three pillars of sustainability (people, profit, and planet).

What we learned

There is no shortcut to sustainability. It requires effort for all parties involved.

What's next for Waste Derived Activated Carbon Initiative

Testing performance of food waste derived activated carbon.
