What inspired me
I was laid off earlier this year and immediately felt the chaos of trying to understand timelines, benefits, paperwork, and next steps—all without a guide. That moment inspired me to build a tool that could bring clarity, support, and emotional relief to others going through the same experience.
What I learned
Through this project, I learned how to: • Think critically about user data privacy and legal implications • Work incrementally, using feedback loops ith bolt to refine the UI • How it must be to do Product Management and decide what features make the most sense to build now vs later
I also saw firsthand the power of combining thoughtful UX with AI potential to create personalized and empathetic digital tools.
How I built it
I built this project while taking the Maven Vibe Coding Bootcamp, with heavy support from ChatGPT to refine my prompts, logic, and implementation. The frontend is built in React with Vite and Tailwind CSS, while Supabase powers authentication and database functionality.
Challenges I faced
While Bolt was powerful, I ran into challenges with: • Framework compatibility (Next.js issues led me to rebuild in Vite) • Estimating server-side performance while staying within free token limits • Redesigning logic and rebuilding key features mid-way through the sprint
I also had to make tough calls around deprioritizing pricing models to stay focused on user trust and value first.
What I’m proud of
• Built a real product solo—from concept to deployed web app
• Created something emotionally thoughtful and technically scalable
• Prioritized ethics and privacy in every product decision
• Launched a working tool that’s ready to support real users
• Designed every screen and interaction to reflect empathy and clarity
What’s next for Layoff Relief
• AI-powered summaries of severance letters and resume-building insights (if legalities permit!)
• Wellness tools to help users manage stress and reclaim confidence
• PDF download of a user’s personalized plan (already kinda working!)
• Deeper integrations with state-specific resources
• Potential partnerships with career coaches, resume writers, or companies offering it as a benefit to laid-off employees
Ultimately, I hope Layoff Relief becomes a companion for anyone navigating job loss—not just a checklist, but a source of structure, peace, and agency.
