Inspiration
In this day and age, it’s not uncommon to aestheticise everything - from food packaging to productivity applications.
One of the biggest challenges Melbournians face is the highly unpredictable weather. This makes it crucial that we check the weather before going out, however many of us forget to check out boring weather apps. We’ve decided to add a splash of creativity by incorporating an intriguing alien concept by displaying pictures of the weather on Planet Cosmo.
What it does
Different weather shows up with different backgrounds, but the alien concept means we flip the weather compared to weather on Earth. For example, negative degree weather is cold on earth, but with the new concept, our weather app shows a background that symbolizes hot weather (all backgrounds are hand-drawn)
How we built it
The website utilizes:
- HTML which provides the layout of our website
- CSS is used to style and position different elements to make our website match our intended aesthetic
- Python is for the backend, while HTML and CSS was for the front end
- We took data from the BOM weather website and linked it so the background changes according to the weather in real time
Challenges we ran into
As first year university students, first time coders and first time hackathon participants, we faced many barriers which we learnt to overcome. The main challenge being not knowing how to code, unsure of what softwares to use and how to collaborate together online. We spent most of our time searching online for courses and tutorials, with some of our members using GitHub for the first time, but now understanding the basics of the platform. Another challenge was time management, as this was our first hackathon, whilst the time limit of 48 hours seemed plentiful, we were working until the last minute, especially as we didn’t know how ambitious we could be with our project. Regardless, we all had fun and loved it as a learning experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were proud of how we learnt to code in a short period of time and utilised online resources and Youtube to help guide us. Additionally, we were really proud of our teamwork and communication and how we overcame challenges and barriers through effective communication.
What we learned
Through this experience, we learnt a lot about coding in HTML, CSS and Python. We learnt how to work together in a team, building on each other’s ideas and delegating tasks. We utilised different members’ skill sets in order to maximise efficiency. We learnt how to combine ideas together and utilise everyone’s ideas to create a unique and comedic video.
What's next for Cosmo Climate
Improving the website by adding more features to it, such as making the background have rain when it is raining in real time, and for the background to show up darker or lighter depending on the. Also, currently our code is not executable by everyone in the public as the python we wrote depended on the position of the file, hence if we had more time, we would extend it to be able to be used by everyone.
