Surplus Share

For this project we wanted to create something that addressed one of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. We felt most strongly about creating a project to help fight against hunger, goal number 2.

We came up with Surplus Share, a food redistribution app that aims to simplify the donation process between businesses and food banks. In the United States alone, we waste billions of pounds of food every year. Our goal with Surplus Share is to reduce that number by making is easy to allocate extra food to food banks.

The way this works is "Donor" accounts (grocery stores, large events, restaurants) will creating listings of their extra food items that "Food Bank" accounts can view and claim. Once the donation has been reserved the Food Bank can go pick it up and complete the donation.

This system works because Food Banks can monitor the available food and choose based on their individual needs and based on their location relative to the various donors.

There are still features in development, such as a notification that will allow Food Banks to receive a notification when a food category of their choice appears as an available donation.
