Inspiration
Staying safe is always on my mind when I'm outside of my house, especially if I am traveling. I had thought about what could benefit the people of Detroit while they waited for their bus, were walking alone, or found themselves in an unknown area. I'm inspired by technology and what it can do for people, so I decided to create Travio using augmented reality and the resources Detroit has for everyone.
What it does
Travio is an iOS app that shows a map of your current location and with augmented reality, showing you the nearest place to you. This allows the user to know what is near by in case of emergency and with a click they view more information about the location. Travio also provides useful tips that are intended for those who use public transit, walk, travel alone, or want to gain valuable information about safety. These tips can be read easily with a quick swipe. The third feature of this app are the easily accessible phone numbers for users who may want to make an emergency call. These three features combined into one app gives the user the confidence to travel in Detroit and gain a better understanding of their surroundings.
How I built it
I built this app using Sketch for the design, Swift for the code, and the Google Places API for displaying locations near by. I took time to research phone numbers that fit the app and I also researched what I thought are the best safety tips.
Challenges I ran into
Initially I wanted to use an augmented reality sdk that used Objective-C and Javascript, however, I found it easier to use a Swift AR component. I also had to make sure the photos I used were free and legal to use so finding pictures of Detroit were a little challenging.
What I learned
I've learned more about Detroit and it's resources for people who travel within the city. It's important to have resources readily available in case of emergency and I also learned about safety for myself.
What's next for TBA
I would like to expand on the safety tips and possibly provide videos.
