Inspiration

I have been working on freelancing and software development till i decided to go back home to help with my family's cold storage business and for 3 to 4 years there, I witnessed firsthand the stress and confusion that taxes bring to small business owners in Ghana. Many rely on paper records, have limited financial literacy and dread interacting with tax offices. This experience inspired me to build a tool that simplifies the tax process for the everyday entrepreneur; starting with Ghana and expanding across Africa.

What it does

TaxFlow is a lightweight, mobile-first platform that helps small businesses:

  • Calculate taxes like VAT, NHIL, PAYE, and corporate tax
  • Track daily sales and generate tax summaries
  • Export reports for filing to local tax authorities
  • Work offline with minimal data usage
  • Operate smoothly on low-end devices

How we built it

Frontend: Next.js 14, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS Backend: Node.js with PostgreSQL Authentication: Email/Password to access the dashboard Features: Tax PDF/Excel exports, real-time calculations We built modular tax engines to support Ghana’s multi-layered tax system, ensuring every calculation (like VAT and NHIL) complies with GRA standards.

Challenges we ran into

  • Ghana’s tax system has overlapping and complex rules, requiring accurate, real-time calculations
  • Many users operate in low-connectivity environments; optimizing for offline access was crucial
  • Building trust with non-technical users meant keeping the design and flow extremely simple
  • As a solo dev, balancing time, cost, and research was and is still an ongoing challenge

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully built a functioning MVP with multi-tax logic
  • Designed a tool simple enough for non-technical users to onboard quickly
  • Built the backend to be scalable to other African tax systems
  • Early tests show SMEs are saving time and reducing filing errors

What we learned

  • Financial tools in Africa must prioritize simplicity and accessibility
  • Users need clarity, not just automation; so building explainable logic mattered
  • Creating real impact means focusing more on local context than flashy features

What's next for TaxFlow Ghana

  • Launch a pilot program with real SMEs in Ghana
  • Integrate with GRA systems or filing platforms
  • Expand support to other West African tax regimes
  • Secure funding and partnerships with fintechs or accounting firms
  • Introduce AI insights to help businesses optimize their tax planning

TaxFlow Ghana aims to be the TurboTax of Africa; built for hustle, not hassle.
