About the Project

codex-scripts-tools is a collection of practical local tools for audit and tax workflows. It brings together a web-based tool hub, a stock trading VAT calculator with Excel output, and a voucher-review module for reading accounting data, matching entities, and producing review workpapers.

Inspiration

The project was inspired by repetitive but detail-sensitive work in internal audit and tax compliance. Many tasks still rely on manually opening files, checking transaction logic, comparing accounting subjects, and consolidating results into spreadsheets. I wanted to turn these recurring steps into reliable, reusable tools while keeping the workflow transparent and suitable for local use.

What I Learned

I learned that automation in financial workflows is not just about producing a result—it must preserve traceability. The tools need clear calculation rules, readable Excel outputs, explicit exception handling, and documentation that distinguishes current behavior from future plans. I also learned how to connect Python processing logic with a simple local web interface so that non-technical users can run specialized tools more easily.

How I Built It

I built the project as modular Python tools with a local web entry point. The main components include:

  • A local tool hub for launching and switching between workflows
  • A stock VAT module that parses trading data, applies calculation rules, and generates Excel workbooks
  • A voucher-review module that reads accounting entries, checks subject consistency, matches entities, and exports review workpapers

The project is managed with Git so each stable stage can be tracked and rolled back. I also added syntax checks and targeted tests to keep the core modules maintainable.

Challenges I Faced

The biggest challenge was balancing flexibility with accuracy. Financial and audit data often contains exceptions, and a generic workflow can easily produce misleading results if rules are unclear. I addressed this by separating modules by responsibility, documenting calculation and review rules, and keeping generated outputs focused on verification rather than hiding the underlying logic.

Another challenge was usability: the tools needed to be useful for day-to-day work without requiring users to understand the underlying code. A local web interface and structured Excel outputs helped bridge that gap.
