Inspiration

We noticed that everyone experiences taste differently — some people can’t enjoy certain foods due to bitterness, low spice tolerance, or personal taste preference. People with dietary restrictions don't get to enjoy the flavors they like due to dietary control. We wanted to create a tool that lets people experience food the way they want, safely and enjoyably, no matter their natural taste perception.

What it does

Tastify is a taste personalization app that:

  • Measures your taste and spice tolerance
  • Provides food recommendations based on your profile
  • Scans foods to see if they match your profile
  • Lets you adjust your taste perception so you can enjoy foods outside your natural tolerance
  • Provides warnings and safety limits for health and digestive concerns

How we built it

  • Figma: Designed UI, app flow, and visual presentation slides
  • Persona-driven design: Created Jamie, Daniel, and Maria to guide features and use cases
  • Flowcharts and diagrams: Showed user journey and app functionality for slides

Challenges we ran into

  • Brainstorming a futuristic, interesting app based on transforming human sensory
  • Designing a system that could safely adjust taste perception in a believable, user-friendly way
  • Representing abstract sensory data visually for a presentation
  • Balancing fun, speculative design with plausible safeguards for health

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Developed three detailed personas and realistic use cases
  • Created a full app flow including scanning, adjusting, and safety warnings
  • Made a visually engaging Figma prototype that clearly communicates a futuristic taste personalization app
  • Thought through ethical and safety considerations for a speculative design

What we learned

  • Designing for human sensory perception requires careful consideration of safety, accessibility, and personalization
  • Using personas and edge cases helps make abstract ideas concrete and user-focused
  • Presenting a speculative idea is about telling a story — users, experience, benefits, and safeguards

What's next for Tastify

  • Explore additional senses like texture perception or aroma personalization
  • Building interactive prototypes to allow user testing
  • Expand recommendations for healthy eating, cuisine exploration, and dietary needs while keeping personalization safe
