Inspiration
In 2021 there were approximately 281 million international migrants. That is 281 million people who have to adjust to new cultures, people, and infinite other factors that come with being a new arrival. Coincidentally, food is a really effective way of bridging cultures and people, especially when it sparks memories of home, whether through the ingredients and taste, or even abstract factors like comfort and tastiness.
What it does
Tastebuds is an app that allows users to post, search, and view food βcomparisonsβ based on a cuisine they know and one they are looking to try, so that they can ease their way into new flavours and cultures stress free. The app provides new arrivals and travellers with a sort of framework that allows them to find new food through dishes they already know and love, or share new culinary discoveries with others.
How we built it
The prototype was built in Figma. A currently in-progress coded prototype was developed with Express.js, MongoDB, and HTML/CSS/Js.
Challenges we ran into
The subjectivity of food
We had struggles with identifying concrete ways to categorize food, and finding balance between uselessly specific and too vague. As everyone has different food palates, there is no standard to measure the infinite factors. To overcome this roadblock, we added a discussion feature, where users are able to talk about a specified food comparison, so that a greater range of thoughts can be shared, beyond the original poster.
The epic highs and lows of highschool football (not coding for a year+ to have fun with design)
What can we say. Coding in a few hours was hard. Sad. Move on.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First Hack Ever !!
This was our first hackathon ever! We are happy to have pushed through to the end and completed a project.
Usable!
We created something that we would both personally use, as non-adventurous eaters and families of immigrants.
Finally figured out Figma Autolayout
Figma autolayout is probably the best thing invented. Awesome. Pog even.
