Inspiration

As Vanderbilt students, we all go out to Taste of Nashville restaurants often. More often than not, we have difficulty deciding where to eat. We constantly have to go back and forth between the Taste of Nashville website and Google Maps because the Taste of Nashville website doesn't provide specific information about the restaurants while Google Maps shows all restaurants around here, not just the Taste of Nashville.

What it does

We compiled information about all of the Taste of Nashville restaurants and created a convenient website to sort, filter based on restaurant type, and view them. We include information about map pinpoints, distance from the current location, address, price rating, and reviews submitted to the website we built.

How we built it

We used React, Javascript, CSS, and HTML as the backbone of the application. We then supplemented by using Firebase to store reviews about the restaurants that viewers submit to the website.

Challenges we ran into

Since we are all first-time hackers and three of us had no experience with front-end development, we had to learn as we go, which slowed our progress. We also constantly dealt with issues with Github and merge conflicts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Since three of us had no experience with front-end work or any of the languages we used today, we were just proud to make a real finished product. It is also a nice bonus that the finished product is something we can actually apply in our daily lives.

What we learned

We all gained experience with front-end work, graphic design, teamwork, and patience.

What's next for Taste The Nash

We would add more information such as restaurant hours, more functionality such as a random restaurant selection button, and we would make our site able to support more traffic so we could release it to the students of Vanderbilt.
