Inspiration
As a family we like to go on little road trips around beautiful countryside of Hobart in Tasmania. Apart from enjoying the countryside scenery passing by we like to add additional purpose to our road trips.
We pick up groceries such as fruit and veg and eggs and whatever is available at the buy at a gate stalls.
I called this type of roadtrip a JOYRIDE SHOPPING.
But this way of buying groceries is not without challenges.
Finding honesty stall is often a matter of luck. When we find some, they are often empty or have items we do not need. And when we are in a very good luck, we find a stall which has what we want, we may not have the correct cash to pay for the items. It made me think that these drawbacks of selling and buying through honesty stalls can be removed.
What it does
this app will organize honesty stalls in a way that makes it easy for potential buyers to see which stall is selling what, the location and indication of price. The concept is similar to uber or airbnb but for locally grown fresh produce sold at the door of a grower or at honesty stall. The similarity with airbnb and similar apps lies in the fact that anyone can buy and sell any fresh produce and the payments can be processed through the app. I gave the app a working name Tassie Life because it would help bring about what I see Tasmania is advertised like to the outsiders.
How we built it
At this initial stage the app is just a graphic representation of the real app. The real app will be build if the idea proves to have a potential.
What's next for TassieLife - new marketplace for fresh produce
Transformation of the fresh produce scene in Tasmania. For now, my aim is to get feedback on this idea. to see if such digital marketplace would be something that people would be using if it were available.
Benefits to various groups within community
If there is enough interest and such marketplace would get very popular there is a variety of outcomes that may appeal to many different groups of people. I can see the following groups of people that might be interested in such marketplace.
Buyers who would like greater variety of fresh produce When people know they are few clicks away from advertising to thousands of people who are interested in local produce they would grow new types of produce to differentiate themselves from competition.
Buyers who want to make sure their food has not been chemically treated. Often fresh produce that can be bought at supermarkets is treated with ripening and sprouting retardants to last longer on the shelf. When sellers know that people prefer organic produce, they would ensure that methods used for growing are what the market expects. And what better way of knowing what you eat than buying direct from the producer
Buyers who prefer less packaging.
Local producers use less or no packaging
Their sales are based on reputation not on colorful plastic they wrap around their produce.
Compare that to supermarkets where it is difficult to buy anything without excessive packaging.
Buyers who prefer to support their local economy over multinationals. Because this market is so easy to access, it is very easy for anyone to become a seller. Even a person with a single tree in the backyard can sign up and start selling the excess fruit. The exchange and flow of money between buyers and sellers will produce much more self-sufficient local economy.
Visitors to Tasmania. Buyers do not need to be locals. The marketplace would benefit tourists as well. Many tourists hire a car when they visit and joyride shopping would be a great way to explore Tasmania.
There would be also be some positive side effects to having a strong digital fresh produce marketplace
Out of town businesses would get more foot traffic People doing joyride shopping need to eat and so restaurants would get customers who would not be there otherwise
Increased food security New connections between people in town and country would form. Knowing small producers personally, is one of the ways to ensure food security.
