Group projects are chaos. No one knows who does what, deadlines get missed, and communication breaks down. TaskMate AI fixes this by using Google Gemini to instantly turn any project brief into a structured team plan.
What it does
Upload any project brief (PDF, PNG, JPG). Gemini AI instantly reads it and generates a complete team plan with:

How we built it
Built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend. Firebase handles Google Authentication and Firestore database. Google Gemini API processes project briefs and returns structured JSON plans. Deployed on Render.
Challenges we ran into
- Gemini API key format changed from AIzaSy to AQ format - had to adapt with x-goog-api-key headers
- Firestore indexes for username search - fixed with in-memory filtering
- API key security - moved to backend environment variables
- Real-time username availability check - implemented with Firestore listeners
- Comments were not showing - fixed the render function to properly display comments
- State persistence on reload - implemented localStorage to save current plan

What we learned
Google Gemini's document understanding can extract structured data from unstructured briefs. Firebase Authentication + Firestore makes building social features surprisingly simple. Always keep API keys in environment variables, never in frontend code. State persistence makes the user experience feel like a real app.
