Inspiration

Taskioo was inspired by a very real frustration. I rely heavily on reminders to manage everyday life. When switching phones, especially between Android and iOS, I had to rebuild my entire reminder system again and again.

Most reminder apps either lack powerful recurring options, do not allow custom snoozing directly from notifications, or fail to behave reliably.

For this competition, we were asked to build for only one platform, so I focused on Android and aimed to build a reminder system that feels dependable and powerful.

What it does

Taskioo is a reminder focused app built for Android.

It allows users to create one time and recurring reminders with flexible rules such as daily, weekdays, weekly, every few days, or every few hours.

Users can snooze reminders directly from the notification with preset options including 22 minutes, without opening the app.

It ensures reminders trigger reliably, survive device restarts, and avoid duplicate notifications.

How we built it

We built Taskioo using Flutter for Android.

The system separates reminders from occurrences. A reminder acts as a template, while each occurrence represents a scheduled instance. This made it easier to manage snoozing, completion, and recurrence logic without conflicts.

We implemented local notification scheduling, runtime notification permissions for Android 13 and above, and reboot handling to ensure reminders continue working even after restarting the device.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was reliability. Reminder apps seem simple but involve complex time based logic.

Handling recurring patterns correctly, preventing duplicate notifications, managing snooze actions, and ensuring reminders survive reboot required careful engineering.

Modern Android restrictions around exact alarms and permissions also added complexity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Taskioo handles snoozing directly from notifications smoothly.

Recurring reminders behave predictably and generate the correct next occurrence.

The app remains stable after reboot and avoids ghost notifications.

For an Android only MVP, it feels solid and dependable.

What we learned

We learned that reminder systems are essentially state machines.

Small features like snooze or repeat require careful logic and edge case handling.

We also learned how Android handles notification permissions and alarm scheduling in modern versions.

What's next for Taskioo

Although this version is built only for Android as required by the competition, the long term vision is cross platform support with proper sync across devices.

We also plan to add natural language input, widgets, and cloud sync so dismissing a reminder on one device clears it everywhere.
