Inspiration
Inspiration for our idea all started with a friend of mine who had ADHD, wanting to somehow gamify his experience of tasks, which he would find dead boring, and have an incentive to beat his procrastination. Even though he wanted to do his tasks, his mind would naturally procrastinate and resist the same because there was no gratification he was getting while doing the task. Therefore we got the idea to build an ideate on the same. Thus, we built Taskin, a gamified task manager that replaces virtual rewards with rewards you can actually enjoy in real life. With AI helping evaluate tasks and rewards, Taskin transforms everyday responsibilities into an engaging experience while giving you rewards that are not in-game but you can actually experience in real life .
What it does
Taskin is an AI-powered gamified task manager that rewards productivity with real-life incentives.
- Create tasks for your everyday goals and responsibilities.
- Have tasks graded manually or with AI based on their difficulty.
- Earn coins by completing tasks.
- Spend those coins in your personal in-app shop to unlock real-life rewards that you define, such as snacks, social media time, gaming sessions, or anything else that motivates you.
- Optionally use AI to estimate the value of your rewards as well, helping maintain a balanced reward system.
Instead of earning meaningless badges or virtual trophies, users earn something they can actually look forward to.
How we built it
We built Taskin as a full-stack web application.
- Frontend: Modern web interface for task management and reward tracking.
- Backend: Handles authentication, AI grading, task management, and reward logic.
- Database: PostgreSQL hosted on AWS for reliable data persistence.
- Deployment: Deployed as a full-stack application on Vercel.
- AI Integration: AI integrated through an API key assists in grading both tasks and rewards based on their relative effort and value.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing a fair and balanced AI-based grading system for tasks and rewards.
- Learning full-stack development while simultaneously building a complete application.
- Managing database schemas, backend APIs, frontend state, and deployment as first-time experiences.
- Creating a gamification system that remains simple, intuitive, and motivating without becoming overly complicated.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully building and deploying our first full-stack application.
- Creating a polished productivity experience centered around real-life rewards rather than virtual achievements.
- Integrating AI into the core gameplay loop instead of using it as a superficial feature.
- Building a complete, functional application from idea to deployment within the hackathon timeframe.
What we learned
This project pushed both of us well outside our comfort zones. Working on this project demanded multiple sessions in our college library and intense debugging, which was all quite demanding for us being newbie full stack developers. We gained hands-on experience with full-stack development, database design, cloud deployment, API development, AI integration, and collaborating on a larger software project. More importantly, we learned how to quickly adapt to unfamiliar technologies while building under tight deadlines.
What's next for Taskin
We're excited to continue evolving Taskin beyond the hackathon. Some features we'd love to add include:
- Shared challenges and friend leaderboards.
- Achievement systems and long-term progression.
- Analytics and productivity insights.
- Smarter AI personalization based on user habits.
- Partnerships with businesses to offer actual merchant rewards alongside self-defined rewards.
- Mobile applications for Android and iOS.
Our vision is to make productivity feel less like a chore and more like a game where the rewards aren't just on your screen, but in your real life.
