Inspiration
Jourvelope came from something I was trying to fix in myself. I wanted to improve my camera confidence and the way I speak. I used to hesitate a lot and fill sentences with things like “umm,” “hmm,” and “aaa.” While searching for ways to improve, I kept seeing the same advice: record yourself speaking and review it.
So I started doing that privately. Just short videos, no posting, no editing. After about a month, I could clearly see the difference. I was more confident, more comfortable on camera, and using far fewer filler words.
That made me realize something: progress can be hard to notice while it is happening, but when you look back, the transformation becomes obvious. That idea became Jourvelope.
What it does
Jourvelope is a private goal video journal. You create a journey around something you want to improve, then record short video check-ins over time.
Those recordings become a visual timeline of your progress, so you can look back at Day 1, Day 30, Day 90, and Today and actually see how you changed.
It can be used for things like public speaking, fitness, learning a skill, guitar practice, building a business, or any long-term personal goal.
How we built it
Jourvelope is built as a native Android app using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. The main focus was making recording fast and simple. Open a journey, record a short update, save it, and move on.
The app includes journey management, video recording and playback, timelines, transformation views, progress tracking, reminders, local media storage, and Pro features.
For purchases, we use RevenueCat with Google Play Billing for monthly and lifetime Pro access.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was deciding what Jourvelope should actually be.
It was easy to keep adding streaks, stats, badges, and habit-tracking ideas, but that started pulling the product away from its real purpose, because of this after getting feedback from some of my fellows about the design I redesign the application for more than 2 times.
The important part was never the streak. It was being able to look back and see the change. We also had to solve practical problems around video recording, playback, local storage, app lifecycle, navigation, purchase handling, and keeping the experience private without making it complicated.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The biggest accomplishment is that Jourvelope grew from a personal habit into a real product with a clear purpose.
We built a complete flow from: Goal → Journey → Daily Video → Timeline → Progress → Transformation
We are also proud that the app stays focused on private self-improvement instead of turning journaling into another social experience.
And most importantly, Jourvelope now represents the exact idea that inspired it: being able to look back and actually see your transformation.
What we learned
The biggest lesson was that more features do not automatically make a better product. Once we started asking, “Does this help the user see their transformation?”, product decisions became much easier.
We also learned that short, private recordings can be more meaningful than polished content. When there is no audience to impress, people can be more honest.
On the technical side, the project taught us a lot about video workflows, Compose architecture, local media handling, monetization, and designing around an emotional experience rather than just functionality.
What's next for Jourvelope — Goal Video Journal
The next step is making the transformation side even stronger. We want to build better Journey Recaps, Day 1 vs Today comparisons, advanced transformation views, exports, custom reminders, and deeper progress insights. The long-term goal is simple: Record who you are today, so one day you can see who you became.
