Inspiration

At CMU-Africa, we have noticed a pressing problem that inspired us to build Tartans Talent Hub. Many of students with partial or no scholarship are facing significant financial challenges, they are left juggling tuition fees, rent, food, and daily expenses while trying to excel in their academics. Those brilliant minds are struggling not only to succeed academically but simply to survive financially.

Second, by conducting market research we found out that small businesses and solo entrepreneurs in the local community who are eager for tech solutions but simply can’t afford the high fees charged by professional firms. T

What it does

Tartans Talent Hub is an online micro jobs-platform that connects CMU-Africa students with small businesses, solo entrepreneurs, and early-stage companies in need of tech solutions. The platform allows businesses to post tech projects such as mobile app development, software engineering, AI/ML solutions, data analytics, cybersecurity, and IoT systems. Students are matched to these projects based on their skills, forming small teams to collaborate and deliver high-quality, real-world solutions.

For students, this platform is a lifeline—a way to earn money, gain real-world experience, and build a portfolio, all while supporting their academic and living expenses. For businesses, it provides affordable access to top-tier tech talent from one of the most prestigious universities in Africa.

The Tartans Talent Hub works in two ways:

Project Posting & Matching: Businesses post projects and are matched with student teams based on the skills required. Direct Hiring: Businesses can also browse student profiles, selecting teams that best fit their project needs. The platform also integrates an alumni mentorship program, where students receive guidance from industry professionals who ensure the quality of their deliverables.

How we built it

We followed the Design Thinking process to create Tartans Talent Hub. After interviewing some students and local business owners, we identified the key pain points: students’ need for income and real-world experience, and businesses’ need for affordable tech solutions.

Ideation: We brainstormed different ways to connect students and businesses, focusing on a system that benefits both groups. Prototype: Using WordPress as our base, we customized a freelancer marketplace template to create an intuitive platform where businesses can post projects and students can form teams.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the project, we encountered several challenges: We didn’t want this platform to feel like just another freelancing gig. Instead, we wanted it to serve as a bridge between education and industry, where students could learn, grow, and apply their skills in meaningful ways.

Another challenge was ensuring that the businesses who couldn’t previously afford professional tech services saw real value in working with student teams. We addressed this by incorporating a system of team collaboration and alumni mentorship. Every project is backed by the expertise of CMU-Africa’s community, ensuring that businesses get high-quality deliverables while students receive the guidance they need to succeed.

Student Time Management: We needed to ensure that students could balance their academic responsibilities with project work. By allowing flexible project timelines and ensuring projects were divided into manageable tasks, we helped students work efficiently without overloading them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Empowering students: We’ve created an opportunity for students to earn money while gaining real-world tech experience, helping them relieve the financial burden and allowing them to fully focus on their studies. Supporting local businesses: We’ve enabled small businesses to access affordable tech solutions, which has allowed them to innovate and grow without stretching their budgets. Bridging the gap between academia and industry: By creating this platform, we are helping students transition from classroom learning to real-world problem solving, building the skills they’ll need for future success. Mentorship-driven quality: Our alumni mentorship program is ensuring that projects are delivered to a high standard, giving businesses confidence in the work produced and helping students develop their professional network.

What we learned

Through this journey, we learned:

Empathy is key: Understanding the financial stress students experience and the technical needs of businesses allowed us to create a solution that addresses both. Design Thinking helped us stay focused on these pain points and develop a platform that provides real value. Collaboration leads to success: Building a platform that fosters teamwork, and mentorship has not only improved the quality of the projects but has also helped students learn faster, improve their skills, and grow their professional network. Financial pressure can be overcome through innovation: By offering students paid opportunities to work on tech projects, we’re proving that financial challenges shouldn’t limit their academic potential or professional growth.

What's next for Tartans Talent Hub

Here’s what’s next:

Expanding the Platform: We plan to scale the platform beyond CMU-Africa, connecting students from other African universities with businesses across the continent. This will expand opportunities for more students and provide even more affordable tech talent for businesses.

Refining the Mentor Program: We will expand our alumni mentorship program, inviting more industry experts to support students. This will enhance the quality of work and help students build valuable professional connections.

Enhancing Features: We aim to improve platform features by introducing more advanced project management tools, including AI-powered project matching and automated progress tracking, to make collaboration smoother for students and businesses.
