Inspiration
The CASE mission was inspired by the movie Interstellar, with the main message being about helping people through space exploration.
What it does
The TARS rover is capable of remote control via a single joystick controller. It moves with two wheels, with four on-board IR sensors detecting nearby objects.
How we built it
We designed the end-to-end mechanical parts with SolidWorks, sourced datasheets and libraries to interface the esp32 and the motor drives, and 3D printed parts.
Challenges we ran into
The 3D printed time limited our ability to develop robust parts, leading to inaccurate tolerances in the final design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We designed a very unique wheel mechanism to traverse challenging terrain with a very easily replaceable mechanical part using simple assembly and 3D printing design.
What we learned
Throughout this hackathon, we learned a lot about designing, troubleshooting electronics, manufacturing mechanical parts, how to integrate electrical design with mechanical and software design to produce a functioning robot.
What's next for TARS
TARS will further implement more sensors and more robust mechanical design
