Inspiration

Currently, global political tension, tariff changes, and trade complications have been rapidly increasing. Companies cannot afford to have products incorrectly exported to other countries and accumulate exorbitant fines. Mistakes can cause a cost of maybe double the value of the goods and the shipment to be parked for months. When we thought of the idea, we knew it was something that is extremely relevant and scalable.

What it does

Terri provides real-time tariffs, sanctions, and regulations between countries to exporters. With this information, exporters can save precious time and billions of dollars annually.

How we built it

We built the frontend with react and the node.js framework. The backend is mainly python. We used AWS bedrock for AI models, and AWS S3 for data storage.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was trying to get massive JSONs we scraped from government websites to be called via our backend. The second biggest challenge was trying to make sure the AI model we used would output the proper tariff information when a user inputted some keywords.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are so proud of our effort level; just staying up, working hard, all towards the same goal. It was all our first times and we were so happy to just participate.

What we learned

Besides the AWS and backend technical lessons, the most important things we learned included how to work with Git in a team and go through the product design process in software engineering. Some of us had used Git before, but never really in a manner that involved a team simultaneously working on the same repo and trying not to get in each others way. It was new to all of us, but ultimately we figured out the branch organization, in-person routines, and the CLI. Also, making a virtual idea come true was extremely invaluable and will absolutely transfer to real-life experiences.

What's next for Terri

Terri is currently built to immediately scale to 190+ countries and further its sights to every global trade regulation.
