Inspiration
Our inspiration was a single question: What does "home" sound like in 2025? We were inspired by the global "lofi hip-hop" phenomenon, which uses nostalgia and mellow beats to create a shared sense of comfort and focus. At the same time, we have a deep love for the rich, ancient musical heritage of Azerbaijan, specifically the soulful, storytelling voices of the Tar and the Kamancha. Our inspiration was to build a bridge between these two worlds—to use the global language of lofi to introduce the timeless soul of Azerbaijani folk music to a new generation.
What it does
This project, "[Lofi Azerbaijan] Tar x Kamancha," is a musical and visual piece that re-imagines traditional Azerbaijani instruments as the lead "voice" in a modern lofi track. It takes the complex, emotive melodies of these classical instruments and sets them against the characteristic vinyl crackle, mellow drum loops, and warm basslines of the chillhop genre. The accompanying video is a seamless, animated loop that provides a relaxing visual atmosphere, blending cultural motifs with the calming aesthetic the genre is known for. It's a "study beat" that also serves as a gateway to cultural discovery.
How we built it
Sourcing: We began by listening to hours of archival and modern recordings of Tar and Kamancha performances to find the most evocative phrases and melodies.
Sampling & Production: These traditional recordings were treated like classic soul or jazz samples. We carefully chopped, time-stretched, and pitched them within a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).
Beat-making: We built the lofi foundation from scratch—a dusty, "off-grid" drum loop, a simple, warm bassline, and atmospheric pads to create a bed of sound.
Fusion: The key was layering the Tar and Kamancha samples into the beat, finding the right pockets and adding effects (like reverb and filtering) to make them feel "at home" in the lofi soundscape.
Visuals: We collaborated with a digital artist to create the looping animation. The prompt was to create a scene that felt both distinctly Azerbaijani and universally relaxing, matching the track's mood.
Challenges we ran into
The greatest challenge was tonal and rhythmic respect. Traditional Azerbaijani music uses microtones and complex rhythms that don't always fit neatly into a 4/4 hip-hop grid. Our first few attempts sounded "off" or "forced." We had to learn to let the traditional samples "breathe," often building the beat around the sample's natural rhythm rather than forcing the sample to fit the beat. It required a lot of patience and sensitive editing to maintain the soul of the original performance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the final blend. It doesn't sound like a "remix"; it sounds like a new, cohesive piece of music. Our biggest accomplishment is seeing comments from people around the world asking, "What is that beautiful string instrument?" We've successfully used a modern trend to spark curiosity about our ancient heritage. We're also proud that the track is genuinely relaxing and functional as a lofi beat, which was our primary goal.
What we learned
We learned that "authenticity" and "modernity" don't have to be enemies. Instead of "watering down" the traditional music, the lofi genre actually highlighted its emotional depth. We also learned that limitations are a huge source of creativity. By limiting our sound palette to just these instruments and a lofi beat, we were forced to be more creative with how we used each element.
What's next for Lofi Azerbaijan
"Tar x Kamancha" is the proof-of-concept for a much larger project. We plan to create a full "Lofi Azerbaijan" series, with each track or EP focusing on different traditional instruments like the Balaban, Zurna, and Naghara. Our next step is to move from sampling recordings to collaborating directly with master musicians in Azerbaijan to create original compositions from the ground up.
