TapOut: Social Stress Monitor

TapOut – Social Stress Monitor

Inspiration

TapOut was inspired by common experiences with social overwhelm. Many people have been in situations where they wanted to leave but didn’t know how to do it without feeling awkward or rude. Often the body reacts to stress before the mind fully recognizes what is happening.

We asked ourselves: what if technology could recognize those early signals and give people a simple, graceful way to step away before the situation escalates?

What It Does

TapOut is an app that helps users recognize when a social environment may be becoming overwhelming and provides tools to respond.

TapOut uses signals from personal devices such as smartphones, smart watches, and smart glasses to monitor contextual and physiological indicators including:

  • heart rate patterns
  • body temperature
  • noise levels
  • location context
  • environmental signals such as crowd density

When TapOut detects rising stress, it sends a gentle notification asking:

"Are you feeling okay?"

Users can choose to:

  • TapOut – receive a phone call that gives a believable reason to leave
  • Check in later – receive another notification shortly
  • I'm okay – dismiss the alert

Users can also manually trigger TapOut inside the app at any time.

How We Built It

We began by brainstorming ideas and identifying a concept that felt both meaningful and technically realistic. TapOut stood out because the most of the technology required already exists but is not commonly used in this way.

We defined our target users as students, working professionals, and neurodivergent individuals ages 18–40 who may experience social overwhelm.

The prototype was built using Figma Make, with custom illustrations, a mobile interface, and a prototype flow demonstrating the TapOut feature and support tools such as guided breathing and boundary-setting suggestions.

We tested the prototype with a small group of users through a survey and received 16 responses, with feedback indicating the app was intuitive and easy to navigate.

Challenges We Ran Into 😅

Working with Figma Make introduced some technical challenges. The tool sometimes struggled to interpret design edits, particularly when importing SVG illustrations.

Converting those elements to PNG files solved the issue. We also needed to adjust how the prototype displayed in a mobile frame when publishing.

Despite these obstacles, the process pushed us to think creatively and iterate quickly.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of 🎉

  • Completing our first designathon
  • Building a full concept and prototype in a short time
  • Designing a human-centered tool focused on reducing social stress

TapOut connects passive sensing, simple insights, and supportive cues to help users recognize overwhelm before it escalates.

What We Learned 📚

Through this project we learned:

  • how to rapidly prototype ideas using AI-assisted design tools
  • the importance of clear communication in collaborative design
  • how to translate emotional experiences into actionable product features
  • how subtle signals can shape user experiences long before they are consciously recognized

What's Next for TapOut

Next, we plan to expand TapOut into a more advanced Social Stress Monitor with:

  • deeper cross-device integration
  • personalized insights based on TapOut history
  • AI-assisted guidance to help users understand patterns and triggers

Our goal is to continue developing TapOut into a subtle system that helps people navigate social environments with more awareness, confidence, and calm. Kiki, Vy, and Bri - The creators of TapOut
